South African Air Force 35 Squadron
On Wednesday 5 December 2012 SAAF C-47TP Dakota 6840, of 35 Squadron, crashed on a mountain top near Giants Castle in the Drakensburg Mountains. She was on a routine shuttle run from Waterkloof Air Force base to Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Severe weather conditions prevailed. All eleven members of the SAAF were killed.
6840 / 40 (cn 13866/25311) SAAF DC-3TP '77' didn't serve long in Goma. Late July 2006, this '40', painted in very low viz colours, came to FZNA. The Dakota was used for parachute dropping the day the picture was taken, hence the open door. Goma (GOM / FZNA) Congo (Kinshasa), August 10, 2006.
